How to Trade Gold: The Complete XAUUSD Guide for 2026

By Sahil Malik · Published July 11, 2026 · Updated July 11, 2026 · Gold Trading

Gold is the most watched instrument in the world for a reason: it moves fast, respects levels cleanly, and reacts to news in a way you can actually plan around. This guide walks you through how to trade gold the way full-time traders do — no jargon, no hype, just the setup, the process, and the risk plan.

What "trading gold" actually means

When traders talk about trading gold, they almost always mean XAUUSD — the spot price of one troy ounce of gold quoted in US dollars. You trade it as a CFD (contract for difference) through an MT5 or MT4 broker. You never take delivery of the metal; you profit from the price change between your entry and your exit.

Three things make XAUUSD different from a normal forex pair:

  • Volatility is high. Gold can make sharp price moves, especially around major news. Convert any pip count using your broker's XAUUSD pip size and plan risk from the price distance.
  • The dollar move matters more than the pip label. On a 100-ounce XAUUSD contract, a $1 price move is about $100 per 1.00 lot and $1 per 0.01 lot, before costs. A broker calling $0.01 one pip will show 100 pips for that move; a broker calling $0.10 one pip will show 10. Contract sizes vary, so confirm the symbol specification.
  • The macro backdrop matters. Gold isn't just a chart; it's the market's opinion on the dollar, real yields, and risk.

What actually moves the gold price

You don't need a PhD in economics, but you need to know who's on the other side of your trade and what they're reacting to. The four things that move XAUUSD more than anything else:

  1. The US Dollar (DXY). Gold is priced in dollars. Strong dollar → cheaper gold in other currencies → less demand → price drops. Weak dollar → the opposite.
  2. US real interest rates. Higher real yields make bonds more attractive than gold (which pays no yield). This is the single biggest driver over months and years.
  3. Inflation expectations. When traders expect inflation to run hot, gold is bought as a hedge.
  4. Geopolitical risk. Wars, banking scares, election uncertainty — anything that spooks money out of risk assets tends to bid gold.

The best times to trade gold

Gold trades 23 hours a day, but not every hour is worth trading. The two windows that produce the cleanest moves:

  • London open (08:00–10:00 GMT) — the first real burst of volume after the Asian range.
  • London–New York overlap (12:00–16:00 GMT) — the deepest liquidity of the day and where most institutional flow happens.

Avoid the Asian session unless you're scalping small ranges — spreads widen and setups fake out. Our best time to trade gold session guide breaks the day down hour by hour.

Step 1 — Open the right account

Not every broker is fit for gold. You want:

  • Tight XAUUSD spreads (ideally under 20 cents on a raw/pro account)
  • 1:500 leverage or higher so you can trade small lot sizes without huge margin
  • Fast execution — gold slippage on a slow broker will eat your edge
  • MT5 so you can run our free tools and the Aurex Trade Copier

Most traders in our community use Exness — the full walkthrough is in Exness Pakistan complete setup guide, but the same broker works globally.

Step 2 — Learn to read the chart before you trade it

You need a repeatable read on the market. The simplest 3-step framework:

  1. Bias on the daily. Is price making higher highs / higher lows (bullish) or the opposite? Mark the last major swing high and low.
  2. Zones on the H4. Draw the two nearest supply and demand zones. Those are your reaction levels.
  3. Trigger on the M15. Wait for price to arrive at your H4 zone, then look for a rejection candle or a break of structure in the direction of your daily bias.

That's it. No 12 indicators. Bias → zone → trigger.

Step 3 — Size the trade properly (this is where most people blow up)

Gold's contract size and pip convention both matter. Here's the math you must know:

Formula: Lot size = (Account × Risk %) ÷ (Stop-loss in pips × Pip value per 1.0 lot)

Worked example: $1,000 account, 1% risk, 300 pip stop-loss on XAUUSD:

  • Risk in dollars = $1,000 × 0.01 = $10
  • Example convention: 100-ounce contract and $0.10 per pip gives $10 per pip per 1.00 lot. A $30 price stop is 300 pips under this convention (or 3,000 pips at $0.01 per pip).
  • Lot size = $10 ÷ (300 × $10) = 0.003 lots under the $0.10-pip convention.

If your broker's minimum lot is 0.01 and your risk math says 0.003, the minimum lot would exceed your planned $10 risk for this stop. Do not round up; skip or redesign the trade. Enter your broker's actual pip value in our free XAUUSD lot size calculator.

Step 4 — Four beginner-friendly gold strategies

1. Trend pullback (H4 EMA 50)

Wait for a clean H4 uptrend (price above the 50 EMA, higher highs). When price pulls back to the 50 EMA and prints a bullish engulfing candle, go long. Stop below the pullback low. Target 1:2 risk-reward.

2. Asian range breakout

Mark the high and low of the Asian session (00:00–07:00 GMT). Trade the first clean break of that range during London open. Stop on the other side of the range.

3. Key level rejection

Gold respects round numbers ($2,000, $2,500, $3,000) and prior week high/low. When price sweeps that level and rejects hard on the H1, that's your entry with a stop above the wick.

4. News fade

After a major US news release (NFP, CPI, FOMC), gold often overshoots then reverses within 30–60 minutes. Wait for the initial spike, let volatility settle, then trade the retracement back to the pre-news level. Only trade this once you've screen-time-tested it — it's not for week one.

Step 5 — Build a risk plan you'll actually follow

The plan is boring on purpose:

  • Max 1% risk per trade. Two losing trades = 2%, done for the day.
  • Max 3% daily loss. Hit it, close MT5, go for a walk.
  • Max 6% weekly loss. Hit it, no trading until Monday.
  • Journal every trade. Screenshot the entry, the exit, and one sentence on why. Use our free trading journal guide as a template.

This is the single biggest difference between traders who last 12 months and traders who don't.

Common mistakes to skip

  • Trading during news without understanding the release
  • Using 0.10 lots on a $500 account because "it's just gold"
  • Moving stops away from price to "give it room"
  • Revenge trading a losing morning
  • Ignoring the daily bias and scalping into a trend

We break these down in top 5 mistakes new forex traders make.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold hard to trade for beginners?

Gold isn't harder than forex — it's just faster. If you respect position sizing and only trade during London and New York hours, it's actually one of the cleaner instruments for beginners. The mistake is treating it like EURUSD and using the same lot size.

How much money do I need to start trading gold?

You can technically open a live XAUUSD account with $50–$100, but $500–$1,000 gives you enough room to survive a losing streak and still size trades at 0.01 lots with a sensible stop.

What's the best timeframe to trade gold on?

H4 for bias, M15 for entries. Daily traders can hold for a week; scalpers can drop to M5 during London open. Don't mix timeframes randomly — pick one setup and stick with it.

Can I trade gold automatically?

Yes. Once you have a rule-based strategy, you can either code it as an MT5 Expert Advisor (see the MT5 EA automation guide) or mirror our team's trades using the Aurex Trade Copier.

Do I need to watch the news to trade gold?

You need to know when the news is out so you're not caught in a spike. You don't need to trade it. Bookmark the economic calendar and check it every morning before you place a trade.
