The Blueprint Behind Every Institutional Move
If SMC is a language, the Power of Three (PO3) is its grammar. Coined by ICT (Michael J. Huddleston), PO3 describes the three-phase cycle that every institutional move follows:
- Accumulation — smart money quietly builds a position.
- Manipulation — price is pushed the wrong way to trap retail and grab liquidity.
- Distribution — the true move unfolds, and institutions offload to trapped retail.
Also known as AMD, this cycle repeats fractally on every timeframe — from the monthly candle down to the 1-minute chart.
Phase 1: Accumulation
Accumulation is a ranging phase. Price consolidates in a tight zone while institutions quietly load positions. Volume is often below average.
On the XAUUSD daily candle, accumulation typically happens during the Asian session (00:00-07:00 UTC). Gold ranges quietly while Asian desks build inventory ahead of European volume.
How to spot it:
- Tight consolidation, small candle bodies
- Equal highs and equal lows forming (obvious liquidity pools)
- Volume drying up
Phase 2: Manipulation
Manipulation is the fake move. Price aggressively breaks out of the accumulation range in one direction — the WRONG direction — sweeping stops and trapping breakout traders.
On the XAUUSD daily candle, manipulation typically happens during the early London session (07:00-10:00 UTC). Gold spikes above or below the Asian range, grabs liquidity, then reverses.
How to spot it:
- Sudden impulsive candle outside the accumulation range
- Sweep of an obvious high or low
- Fast reversal back inside the range within 1-3 candles
The manipulation direction is almost always OPPOSITE to the true daily direction. If Asian range is broken to the UPSIDE during London open and then reverses, the true daily move is DOWN.
Phase 3: Distribution
Distribution is the real move. After trapping retail, institutions push price in the true direction — often for the entire remaining session. This is where 70-80% of the day's range unfolds.
On XAUUSD, distribution typically dominates the London-NY overlap (12:00-16:00 UTC).
How to spot it:
- Strong, sustained trend in the opposite direction of the manipulation
- Breaks of structure in the new direction
- Fair value gaps left behind, not filled
The PO3 Daily Candle Blueprint on XAUUSD
A typical PO3 bullish day on gold:
- 00:00-07:00 UTC (Accumulation): gold ranges $10 wide during Asian session.
- 07:00-10:00 UTC (Manipulation): gold sweeps Asian low, drops $15 below the range. Retail shorts pile in.
- 10:00-16:00 UTC (Distribution): gold reverses hard, breaks Asian high, and rallies $30-$50 into NY session close.
The daily candle closes as a bullish candle with a long lower wick — the manipulation wick — followed by a strong body — the distribution move. That's PO3 on a single daily candle.
Trading the PO3 Model
The classic PO3 entry:
- Identify the accumulation range during Asian session.
- Wait for manipulation — a sweep of Asian high or low.
- Wait for a Change of Character back into the range on 15M.
- Enter at the resulting order block or FVG.
- Stop beyond the manipulation extreme.
- Target the opposite side of the range and beyond.

PO3 on Different Timeframes
- Weekly PO3: Monday accumulation, Tuesday manipulation, Wednesday-Friday distribution.
- Daily PO3: Asian accumulation, London manipulation, NY distribution.
- 4H PO3: first 4H bar accumulates, second manipulates, third+ distributes.
- Hourly PO3: repeats on individual session opens.
The fractal nature means PO3 works whether you're a swing trader or a scalper.
Common PO3 Mistakes
- Fading real breakouts. Not every move out of a range is manipulation. If the "manipulation" candle closes strongly outside the range and never comes back, it was a real breakout.
- Entering during manipulation. Manipulation looks tempting because it's the strongest move of the day so far. Wait for the CHoCH back into range.
- Ignoring higher-timeframe context. PO3 works best when aligned with the daily bias. Counter-trend PO3 has a much lower win rate.
- Trading during news. Major news (NFP, CPI, FOMC) overrides the PO3 cycle. Skip those days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PO3 work every day?
No. About 60-70% of trading days show a clean PO3 pattern on XAUUSD. Ranging days, low-volume holidays, and major news days often skip the manipulation phase.
What time zone is best for tracking PO3?
UTC is the standard for institutional analysis. Set your platform clock to UTC to see the Asian/London/NY sessions align correctly.
Can I use PO3 on crypto or indices?
Yes. Crypto (BTC/ETH) shows very clean PO3 on 24-hour cycles. NAS100 and S&P 500 show PO3 within the RTH (regular trading hours) session.
Is PO3 the same as the ICT Silver Bullet?
No. Silver Bullet is a specific 1-hour NY-open entry model. PO3 is the overarching daily framework. Silver Bullet trades are usually taken during the PO3 distribution phase.
Quick answer
