The Reason Your Stops Keep Getting Hit
Every retail trader has lived it: you enter long on XAUUSD, place your stop below yesterday's low, and within an hour price spikes down exactly to your stop, reverses, and rallies without you. This isn't bad luck — it's engineered liquidity.
Institutions need counter-orders to fill large positions. The easiest source of those counter-orders is the pile of retail stop losses sitting in predictable places. Sweep them, fill your book, then reverse. This is the mechanic behind virtually every "unfair" move on gold.
What Is Liquidity in Forex?
Liquidity is the pool of resting orders — both entries and stop losses — that a large institution needs to fill their position without moving the market against themselves.
Two types matter:
- Buy-side liquidity (BSL): stops above old highs and buy-stop orders. Sweeping BSL means price spikes UP to grab those orders.
- Sell-side liquidity (SSL): stops below old lows and sell-stop orders. Sweeping SSL means price spikes DOWN.
Draw a horizontal line at every recent swing high (BSL) and swing low (SSL). Those are the magnets.
The Anatomy of a Liquidity Sweep
A textbook sweep on XAUUSD:
- Price consolidates near an obvious high or low.
- A sudden impulsive candle wicks past the level.
- Price closes back inside the range within 1-3 candles.
- Structure shifts on the lower timeframe.
- A new trend begins in the opposite direction.
Steps 3-5 are the trade. Anyone who bought the breakout or shorted the breakdown gets stopped or trapped; smart money takes the other side.
Equal Highs and Equal Lows: The Sweep Magnet
When you see two or more highs at nearly identical prices — equal highs — you can bet those stops will be swept. Same for equal lows. Institutions specifically target these clusters because they're the most obvious retail stop zones.
Mark equal highs and equal lows on your XAUUSD chart. Ninety percent of them get taken within days.
Trading the Sweep — The Turtle Soup Setup
The classic reversal entry:
- Bias: higher timeframe supports a reversal (e.g., daily is bullish).
- Sweep: 15M price sweeps a nearby sell-side liquidity pool (old low).
- Confirmation: 15M shows a Change of Character (CHoCH) back to the upside.
- Entry: on the pullback to the order block that caused the CHoCH.
- Stop: 3-5 pips below the sweep low.
- Target: the next buy-side liquidity pool.

Session-Specific Liquidity on XAUUSD
Gold has predictable liquidity events:
- Asian range highs/lows: almost always swept during London open (07:00-09:00 UTC).
- London highs/lows: almost always swept during NY open (12:30-14:30 UTC).
- Daily/Weekly highs/lows: swept during major news drops.

When NOT to Trade the Sweep
- If the sweep happens during a major news release, the "reversal" often just continues after a brief pullback.
- If the higher timeframe is trending strongly against the reversal, the sweep may just be continuation liquidity.
- If there's no Change of Character on the lower timeframe, wait. No CHoCH = no confirmation = no trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do brokers hunt stops?
Reputable ECN brokers do not hunt stops — they route orders to liquidity providers. Stop hunts are caused by institutional order flow at obvious levels, not your broker. If your broker is running a B-book, that's a separate problem — trade with regulated brokers only.
How far past a level do stops get swept?
XAUUSD can move beyond a visible level, but the distance varies with market conditions and broker pip conventions. Define any buffer in price units and avoid assuming that every sweep follows a fixed range.
Can I place my stops in "safer" places?
Yes. Instead of placing stops directly below obvious swing lows, place them beneath the liquidity pool itself — beyond where the sweep would end. Tighter stops in obvious spots are stop-hunt bait.
What's the difference between a sweep and a breakout?
A sweep briefly wicks past a level then closes back inside within 1-3 candles. A breakout closes convincingly beyond the level and holds. If in doubt, wait for the retest.
Quick answer
If your stop keeps getting hit right before price reverses, you're not unlucky — you're the liquidity. Learn to spot the sweep before it happens.
