Forex Trading Tax in Pakistan: What Every Trader Should Know (2026)

By Sahil Malik · Published July 5, 2026 · Updated October 3, 2026 · Pakistan

Quick Answer: Is Forex Trading Taxable in Pakistan?

Forex trading profits in Pakistan should not automatically be treated as tax-free, and there is no single forex tax rate for every trader. Tax treatment depends on facts such as residence, source, the instrument and contract, trading activity, applicable income classification and the tax year.

The safest workflow is: reconcile your broker results → determine residence and source → establish the applicable income head → calculate taxable income under the current law → apply the relevant rates and reporting rules. A withdrawal is cash movement, not automatically taxable profit.

Is Forex Trading Taxable in Pakistan?

Forex trading profits in Pakistan should not automatically be described as tax-free, but there is no single “forex tax rate” that applies to every trader. The result can depend on the taxpayer's residence, the source and nature of the income, how the activity is carried on, the instrument and contract involved, and the income head that applies under Pakistan law. A withdrawal to a bank account is evidence of money movement; it is not, by itself, a complete tax calculation.

The primary framework is Pakistan's Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, amended up to 30 June 2026. A trader should determine the facts and applicable provisions before selecting a return category or rate. This guide explains the process for education only; it is not individualized tax or legal advice. For a filing decision, consult a Pakistani tax professional using your complete records.

How Forex Trading Income May Be Treated

The Ordinance organizes taxable income under statutory heads. It does not create a simple retail “forex income” label with one dedicated rate. Classification therefore matters before a tax slab or calculation can be considered.

Depending on the facts, an adviser may need to examine whether the activity falls within income from business, speculation business, capital gains, another applicable head, or a different treatment. Relevant facts can include trading frequency, commercial organization, intention, the legal nature of the instrument, whether contracts are settled by delivery, and whether the person is trading personally or through an entity.

Section 19 contains specific rules for a speculation business and treats it separately from another business, including for loss treatment. Its statutory definition concerns contracts for the purchase and sale of commodities—including stocks and shares—that are settled otherwise than by actual delivery or transfer, subject to stated exceptions. That does not justify automatically calling every retail forex transaction speculation business. The contract and facts must be reviewed under the current law.

Likewise, “business income,” “capital gain,” and “income from other sources” should not be selected merely because an online article uses that label. The applicable head affects computation, losses, credits and potentially the rate, so classification should come first.

Why There Is No Universal Forex Tax Rate

Pakistan does not publish a standalone rate called the “forex trading tax rate.” Once the relevant income classification and taxable amount are established, the rules and rates applicable to that taxpayer, income category and tax year must be applied. Individual, salaried, non-salaried and entity circumstances should not be mixed into one table.

This is why a generic answer such as “forex traders pay exactly X%” can be misleading. Annual Finance Act changes can alter slabs and related rules, while deductions, losses, foreign tax and other facts can alter the computation. Check the current material on the FBR Income Tax Ordinance page and obtain advice for the relevant tax year rather than relying on an old rate card.

Illustrative example only — not a universal forex tax rate

Suppose a trader has trading activity during a tax year. The correct workflow is not simply to multiply total withdrawals by a percentage:

  1. Reconcile deposits, withdrawals, open positions and realized trading results from the broker statements.
  2. Determine the taxpayer's residence and the geographical source of the relevant income.
  3. Establish the appropriate income classification from the facts and current law.
  4. Calculate the amount chargeable under the provisions for that classification, including only deductions or losses that are legally available and documented.
  5. Apply the rules and rates for that taxpayer and tax year.
  6. Consider an eligible foreign tax credit only if foreign income tax was actually paid and every statutory condition is met.

This sequence teaches the calculation process; it does not calculate any reader's liability.

Does Foreign-Source Income Matter?

Yes, but an offshore broker or foreign payment channel does not automatically make every trading gain “foreign-source income.” Source and tax treatment depend on the facts and the Ordinance. Residence also matters. The FBR identifies Sections 81 to 85 for resident and non-resident concepts, while Section 101 addresses geographical source rules.

The source analysis may require looking at the taxpayer, activity, contract, counterparty and relevant statutory rule. It should not be inferred only from the broker's website domain, the account currency, the server location or where funds were withdrawn.

Foreign tax credit under Section 103

Section 103 of the Ordinance addresses a foreign tax credit for a resident taxpayer who derives foreign-source income chargeable to tax in Pakistan and has paid foreign income tax on that income. Subject to the section, the credit is limited to the lower of the foreign tax paid or the Pakistan tax payable on that income. The provision applies separately where foreign income falls under different heads, and it includes timing and evidence conditions.

This does not mean every forex trader receives a credit. A broker fee, spread, commission or withholding is not automatically a qualifying foreign income tax. Eligibility depends on the statutory conditions and proof of the tax paid. FBR's Rule 16 guidance describes supporting evidence for a foreign tax-credit claim.

Foreign losses under Section 104

Section 104 contains specific rules for expenditure and losses connected with foreign-source income. Broadly, a foreign loss under a head is dealt with against foreign-source income under that head, subject to the section's carry-forward and ordering rules. Speculation business is treated separately for this purpose. Do not net every overseas trading loss against unrelated Pakistan income without checking whether the provision permits it.

Taxation vs Forex Regulation in Pakistan

Taxability and regulatory authorization are separate questions:

  • Tax question: How should a person's income or gain be treated under Pakistan's tax law?
  • Regulatory question: Is a broker, platform or service authorized to offer a particular activity in Pakistan?

Paying or reporting tax does not make every broker legal or authorized. Equally, the existence of an offshore platform does not establish its authorization in Pakistan. Our separate guide discusses the broader question of forex trading legality in Pakistan, but users should verify current status with the relevant regulator rather than relying on marketing claims.

Check the Broker or Platform's Regulatory Status

Before depositing funds, verify the entity behind the website or app, the regulator it claims, the licence number and the activities covered by that licence. Do not assume that accepting Pakistani customers, offering local payment options or displaying another company's logo proves authorization.

SECP has repeatedly warned the public about unauthorized online trading and investment platforms. Its April 2025 warning on illegal offshore trading platforms specifically cautions against platforms offering forex and other speculative products without regulatory approval. A later December 2025 SECP warning addresses fraudulent platforms impersonating licensed brokers.

These warnings are regulatory alerts, not a substitute for advice on an individual platform. Check current official registers and warnings before funding an account. Aurex Trader does not label a broker “approved,” “safe” or “legal” merely because it accepts registrations.

Filer and Non-Filer Considerations

Filer or Active Taxpayer List status can affect compliance and the rates or withholding treatment attached to particular transactions. It does not create one fixed “non-filer forex tax.” The consequence depends on the transaction and the provision in force for that tax year.

Do not apply a filer/non-filer percentage copied from a bank transaction, property or another category to trading profit. Review the current rule for the actual transaction. Filing a return also does not determine the underlying classification by itself; the return must reflect a supportable classification and calculation.

Records Pakistani Traders Should Keep

Keeping organized records can support accurate reporting, explain fund movements and help a professional review the correct treatment. Useful records include:

  • deposits and withdrawals;
  • complete broker and trading statements;
  • realized gains and losses, separate from open positions;
  • transaction dates and the instrument traded;
  • spreads, commissions and other fees or charges;
  • bank, card, wallet or payment-service records;
  • exchange rates and the conversion method used where relevant;
  • evidence of any foreign income tax paid;
  • filed tax returns, wealth statements and supporting schedules; and
  • correspondence or contracts that explain the trading arrangement.

Not every item is necessarily required in every case, and keeping a document does not make an expense deductible. It creates a better evidence trail. Traders using MT5 can export account history, while our Pakistan withdrawal guide explains why deposit and withdrawal records should be reconciled rather than viewed in isolation.

How to Report Trading Income

The filing route depends on the classification and taxpayer. A cautious process is:

  1. Download complete statements for the tax year and reconcile them to payment and bank records.
  2. Separate capital introduced from realized results and identify open positions at the reporting date.
  3. Establish residence, source and the legally supportable income head.
  4. Review the current Ordinance and Finance Act material for that tax year.
  5. Determine which expenses, losses, credits and disclosures are available under the applicable provisions.
  6. Prepare the return and supporting wealth/reconciliation information using FBR IRIS.
  7. Retain the calculation and evidence used, and obtain professional advice where classification or cross-border issues are uncertain.

A platform statement and a Pakistani bank statement may show different numbers because one records trading activity and the other records cash movement. Neither should be treated as a complete taxable-income formula on its own.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming offshore activity never needs to be considered in a Pakistan return.
  • Treating total bank withdrawals as profit without reconciling deposits and trading statements.
  • Assuming money left in a trading account can never have tax relevance.
  • Calling every gain business income, capital gain or speculation income without checking the facts.
  • Claiming a foreign tax credit for ordinary broker costs or without proof of qualifying foreign tax.
  • Applying an old tax slab or a withholding percentage from an unrelated transaction.
  • Treating tax reporting as proof that a platform is authorized.
